Hydrogen water – Effective for Diabetes

“Diabetes” is one of the diseases related to lifestyle, but a 2014 survey by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, currently has 3,166,000 people with diabetes. According to 2014 census data, the number of deaths from diabetes was 13,669 (men: 7,265, women: 6,404). The prevalence of people with diabetes (those with suspected diabetes) was 15.5% for men and 9.8% for women. Diabetes is one of the causes of eating too much, drinking too much, being inactive, the main cause is “abnormal glucose metabolism”.

Here, we will explain the effects and relationship of hydrogen water on diabetes (abnormal glucose metabolism).

1. What is diabetes?

Diabetes is caused by a lack of insulin secreted by the pancreas. Insulin secretion is inadequate, glucose is not used efficiently, blood sugar levels rise, and it has various effects on the entire body.

    • Insulin: The unique hormone that brings blood glucose into the muscles and liver and lowers blood sugar. It is made up of beta cells in the pancreas and is carried throughout the body by the blood.
    • Blood sugar level: Blood sugar level is the amount of glucose in the blood. Glucose (blood sugar), which is the digestive tract (carbohydrates) like starch, is used for energy.

Blood sugar levels increase with carbohydrate consumption (diet) and decrease with exercise. In a healthy body, insulin is controlled within a certain range so that blood sugar doesn’t fluctuate drastically even when you eat or exercise.

 

2. Type of Diabetes

2.1. Type-1 Diabetes

Diabetes caused by the pancreas being unable or less to secrete insulin due to a virus or the like. It is commonly found in children and the younger generation.

2.2. Type-2 Diabetes

Many Japanese are genetically weak in insulin secretion, and diabetes is caused by decreased insulin secretion or work due to factors such as overeating, inactivity, obesity, and stress. 95% of diabetics are of this type, mainly middle-aged and older, the number of young people is increasing.

 

2.3. Others

Diabetes caused by genetic abnormalities, other diseases, drugs, etc., and gestational diabetes with impaired glucose metabolism due to pregnancy.

 

3. Symptoms of Diabetes

When blood sugar is elevated, initial subjective symptoms include increased thirst, polyuria, and polyuria. (*For mild diabetes, many cases have no subjective symptoms, slow detection).

If hyperglycemia is not treated, blood sugar will continue to rise and complications will occur easily, leading to neurological diseases (numbness in the limbs or the legs), retinopathy (blurred vision or amblyopia, numbness), kidney disease (high blood sugar, swelling, urine toxicity and the need for dialysis due to kidney failure). Besides, it also causes hardening of the arteries and leads to terrible diseases such as myocardial infarction, stroke (infarction and brain hemorrhage), and peripheral artery disease (inability to walk and amputation, ulceration/gangrene).

 

4. Diabetes Treatment

If you have diabetes, you need to control your blood sugar for treatment. For that purpose, treatment is accomplished by stimulating the β-cells of the pancreas with a drug to promote insulin secretion or by injecting insulin directly into the bloodstream. Recently, however, a baseline improvement of diabetes has been considered and it has been recognized that it is important to ameliorate the dysfunction of β-cells in the pancreas (glucose metabolism), and treatment is to protect the β-cells in the pancreas.

Why is hydrogen water effective for diabetes?

Since about 2008, hydrogen water has been reported to be effective in preventing the onset of diabetes and improving symptoms, and hydrogen water has been attracting attention in the treatment of diabetes.

Pancreatic β cells that secrete insulin are vulnerable to reactive oxygen species. The reactive oxygen species produced in the body damage the β cells of the pancreas and reduce the amount of insulin which lowers blood sugar. In addition, the intracellular mitochondria that convert glucose into energy are impaired by active oxygen, glucose reception is also impaired, leading to more advanced diabetes.

Hydrogen permeation of cells by drinking hydrogen water reduces pancreatic damage from its function of removing and blocking active oxygen, protects β-cells, and improves mitochondrial function to convert glucose into energy, due to that improves blood sugar. Helps prevent diabetes and its complications. 

 

5. Academic Papers on The Effect of Hydrogen water for Diabetes

Many studies have been published on the effects of hydrogen on diabetes.

    • [Title] The Use of Hydrogen water improves lipid and glucose metabolism or glucose tolerance in patients with type 2 diabetes.
    • [Author] Kajiyama Shizuo et al (Kajiyama Internal Medicine Clinic, Kyoto Prefectural Medical University, et al.).
    • [Summary] In the study, 30 type 2 diabetics and 6 diabetic patients prepared with diet and exercise therapy were given 900ml of hydrogen water (300ml 3 times a day) to drink. for 8 weeks to see the comparative effect. It was reported that drinking hydrogen water reduced blood sugar, and the symptoms of 4 out of 6 diabetic reserve people improved. From this result, it was clinically confirmed that hydrogen water is helpful in preventing type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance.

    • [Summary] Using mice with type 2 diabetes and normal mice, the effects of preventing and mitigating disease onset were compared and examined between hydrogen water and non-hydrogen tap water. Continuous oral administration for 3 months showed antioxidant and hypoglycemic effects in rats given hydrogen water, suggesting that the onset of type 2 diabetes was reduced.
