Hydrogen-rich gas inhalation helps improve auditory function of Nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients after radiotherapy

As one of the most common malignant tumors in the head and neck, throat cancer (Nasopharyngeal carcinoma) is primarily treated with either radiotherapy alone or a combination of radiation and chemotherapy. Radiotherapy for throat cancer often leads to complications such as middle ear fluid effusion, necrosis of the hyoid bone, injury to the cochlea, and auditory nerve damage. Hearing loss is a prevalent and adverse reaction, especially in the later stages, following radiotherapy for Nasopharyngeal carcinoma. As patients survive longer, this complication worsens and significantly impacts their quality of life.

  • Hydrogen has been studied for its potential to protect the hair cells of the auditory system through its antioxidant effects and its ability to improve hearing.
  • Seventeen patients (7 males, 10 females, aged 47-67) with hearing loss for over 5 years participated in a hydrogen inhalation experiment. The subjects inhaled a mixture of Hydrogen-Oxygen, containing 2 Liters/min of Hydrogen and 1 Liter/min of Oxygen.
  • Specifically, Hydrogen-rich gas inhalation helped with the following:

Improvement of Eustachian tube function:

The scores before and after 4 weeks of hydrogen inhalation decreased significantly: 3.25 ± 2.00 – 2.59 ± 1.65

Changes in auditory function:

After 4 weeks of hydrogen inhalation treatment, both the air conduction threshold and bone conduction threshold were significantly lower compared to before hydrogen inhalation:

Air conduction threshold: 77.46 ± 28.12 – 73.35 ± 28.20 (dB)

Bone conduction threshold: 46.76 ± 20.73 – 44.56 ± 19.50 (dB)

The average air-bone gap also decreased compared to before treatment: 30.70 ± 11.12 – 28.78 ± 13.44 (dB)

The Hydrogen-rich gas inhalation of the 17 patients in this research group was conducted under strict medical supervision, and no other medical interventions were performed throughout the entire period. Therefore, it can be concluded that the improvement in hearing in these patients is undoubtedly a result of hydrogen inhalation.
